Speaker 2: Sonia Arellano

This is an excerpt from Sonia Arellano's talk: "Mexican Privatization and Public Responsibility: Analyzing How Neoliberal Rhetoric Supports the Privatization of Illegalized Immigrant Detention in Arizona." Here, Arellano shows how the culture of fear fomented by Arizona Governor Jan Brewer conflates immigrants with Mexicans and Mexicans with criminals, thereby enabling private contractors to secure profits under an ideology of keeping "our" neighborhoods safe by incarcerating these criminalized "others." Arellano concludes by reflecting upon the implications of such fear-base stereotyping for Brown academics.
